Multiply by 9. A 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft. A 250 gaj plot is 2,250 sq ft.

The mistake that makes a plot sound nine times bigger

“A 200 gaj plot” means 200 square gaj — 200 square yards. It does not mean the plot is 200 yards long, and people who read it that way walk into a viewing expecting something enormous. A 200 gaj plot is roughly 42 feet by 42 feet. That is a comfortable urban plot, not a field.

The confusion is easy to make because gaj is also used as a linear unit in fabric and tailoring, where a gaj is one yard of cloth. In land, it always means the square.

What each size gives you to build on

Because so many Indian plots are sold in a standard ladder of gaj sizes, the square footage is worth knowing by heart:

• 50 gaj — 450 sq ft
• 100 gaj — 900 sq ft
• 200 gaj — 1,800 sq ft
• 500 gaj — 4,500 sq ft
• 1,000 gaj — 9,000 sq ft

Remember that this is land, not floor. Setback rules and ground coverage limits mean you cannot build across the whole plot, and the built-up area of a finished house on a 100 gaj plot depends entirely on how many floors the local rules allow.
