Square Feet to Hectares

A hectare is 107,639 square feet. Convert a large area into the unit land registries and agricultural records outside the US actually use.

1ha

Formula: hectares = square feet × 0.00000929

Divide by 107,639. A 43,560 sq ft acre is 0.4047 hectares. A million square feet is 9.29 hectares.

A hectare is a square 100 meters on a side

That is the whole definition: 100 m × 100 m, so 10,000 m², so 107,639 sq ft. Unlike the acre — which arrived from ploughing practice and kept an awkward number — the hectare was designed to be easy, and it is. Any metric area in square meters becomes hectares by dividing by 10,000.

The unit exists because square kilometers are too big for farmland and square meters are too small. A hectare sits at roughly the size of a decent field, which is exactly the scale most land decisions are made at.

When you will need this conversion

Almost always when a US or UK figure has to enter a document written for somewhere else: an international property listing, an environmental or planning submission, an agricultural grant application, or a land registry outside the imperial world. Solar and infrastructure projects are quoted in hectares nearly everywhere.

For a rough mental check, a hectare is about two and a half acres. If a conversion tells you a 20-acre farm is 80 hectares, the arithmetic went the wrong way — it is closer to 8.
