Square Meters to Acres

Divide by 4,046.86. A 10,000 m² field — one hectare — is 2.471 acres. A 2,000 m² plot is just under half an acre.

Convert once, not twice

The instinct is to go metric to square feet and then square feet to acres, because those are the two conversions people know. It works, but each hop rounds, and land areas are large enough that the rounding compounds visibly. Going straight through 4,046.86 keeps the whole calculation to one operation and one rounding step.

The constant is exact, incidentally, not measured: an acre is defined against the international foot, so 4,046.8564224 m² is the precise figure and 4,046.86 is fine for anything short of a survey.

Hectares are the unit you probably want instead

If you are working in square meters and dealing with land, the hectare usually fits better than the acre. It is simply 10,000 m², so a metric land area converts to hectares by moving the decimal point four places — no constant required. One hectare is 2.471 acres, which is the only figure you need to move between the two systems.

Agricultural records, EU subsidy paperwork and most national land registries outside the US and UK are kept in hectares. Acres tend to appear in those documents only when someone is translating for a foreign buyer.
